Several years ago I heard Bob Earll speak about the “Greatest pain in a man’s life: his career, money and love life.” I immediately realized he was telling my story.

You’re not going to have to go through all the pain that I, Bob Earll, countless number of men and women experience by opting in and learning more.

Bob Earll was a recovering alcoholic from Los Angeles who ran away from home at 15, lived on the streets and got sober when he was 27. He wrote about it for Raymond Burr’s “Ironsides.” television show.

How’s that for developing a career out of your life experience? That happens a lot.

Bob mentored tough, hard nosed-men who wouldn’t call him for help until they wanted to “put a gun in their mouth and blow their brains out.”

When they finally called it wasn’t about alcohol or drugs. It was about one or more of three things: Career, Money or Love Life.

Bob’s counselor told him, “I agree career, money and love life cause the most pain, so tell me what you learned about them growing up.”

I don’t remember Bob’s answer, but my dad taught me in second grade to deposit $1.00 weekly in my saving’s account. While declaring, “You boys think we’re made of money.” Or “You spend it like we’ve got it.”

Dad worked 38 years for International Harvester. My folks drove me to college, settled me in my dorm room and were about to drive home when  dad out-of-the- blue says, “Jack, never work for a big company.” My younger brother Roger and I worked for many big companies.

Love life. Meaning girls. Nada. Zip. Nothing, Years later after my wife ran off with another man, “We knew when you started dating her she had lots of problems.”

I don’t blame mom and dad for my problems. They did the best they could.
